Mahway is an upper-middle income town of about 25,000 people perched at the very top of New Jersey, in northern Bergen County. This quiet bedroom community sits just a few miles south of the border with the state of New York and Sterling Forest State Park. The Mahwah area itself has no shortage of natural beauty, being near the Ramapo and Campgaw Mountains.

Mahwah got its name from the Native American Lenape language. Specifically the word “mawewi”, which means “Meeting Place” or “Place Where Paths Meet”. It’s believed that the name came from the area’s historical significance as a crossroads in the Ramapo Mountains.

Mahwah is a peaceful town with tree-lined streets and stately homes, but it’s no stranger to the ravages of opioid addiction and alcoholism. Its relatively close proximity to New York City along with the affluence of its residents, ironically, made Mahwah especially vulnerable to the wave of addiction in many ways.

Bergen County saw 308 opioid overdoses in 2022 alone. Sadly 189 of these were fatal. Bergen County sees more than its share of drug overdoses unfortunately, with 8-10% of OD’s in New Jersey occurring here.

• Bergen County had 308 drug overdoeses in 2022.
• 189 of Bergen County’s 308 overdoses in 2022 were fatal.
• New Jersey hit a peak of 3,144 overdose deaths in 2021.
• NJ drug overdoses seem to be in decline (2,564 in 2023).

Despite the grim statistics, there are good reasons for families facing addiction in Mahwah to have hope. The increase in drug use and the spike in overdoses in New Jersey that paralleled the COVID-19 epidemic seems to have crested, thankfully.

In 2023 New Jersey experienced 2,564 overdose deaths — while this number is still alarming, it represents a 16% drop from the 3,054 overdose deaths in 2022. It may be a modest decline, but it represents progress and it’s encouraging, especially in the context of other trends.
