Addiction therapy refers to the many different types of treatments that are used to help heal someone from psychological dependence related to addiction. There are many different types of therapies that are used by addiction treatment facilities.

Individual or psychotherapy is commonly used in an addiction treatment program. In this setting, a professional therapist will discuss with an individual the underlying issues that may have lead to their addiction. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a common form of individual therapy.

Group therapy is also commonly used in an addiction treatment program. In this setting, a group of individuals suffering from addiction will all discuss different topics related to their disease. Group therapy helps build a community of support so addicts recognize they are not alone in their recovery.

Family therapy is when a patient’s family joins in session with a licensed therapist to help discuss the issues the family has dealt with as a result of an individual’s addiction. Addiction affects the entire family. Each person involved is affected in a unique way. It is important that each family member’s concerns are addressed.
