Full-day treatment, home every night

Partial Care, also called a partial hospitalization program or PHP, is the most structured level of care at North Jersey Recovery Center. You spend most of the day in treatment at our Fair Lawn center and return home or to a sober living residence in the evening. It combines the intensity of a daily clinical program with the freedom to sleep in your own bed, keep family routines, and practice recovery skills in real life from day one.

Our Partial Care program serves adults across Bergen County and North Jersey who are working through alcohol or drug use alongside a co-occurring mental health condition. It is a frequent first step for people beginning treatment, and a well-supported landing point for people coming out of a residential, inpatient, or detox program. If you need medically supervised detox first, we coordinate it with accredited partners and hold your place.

Who Partial Care is designed for

Partial Care is a strong fit for adults 18 and older who:

  • Are using alcohol, opioids, heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines, or prescription drugs in a way that calls for daily clinical support
  • Are living with a co-occurring condition such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, OCD, ADHD, or a mood or personality disorder
  • Want a full day of structure while still living at home or in sober living
  • Are transitioning from an inpatient or residential program and want a strong bridge back to daily life
  • Have been in a lower level of care and would benefit from more support right now

Your treatment begins with a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment and a psychiatric evaluation, and your level of care is assigned using the ASAM Criteria, the national standard for matching treatment intensity to need. From there, your primary therapist, our medical team, and our clinical leadership build a plan around your goals and adjust it as you progress.

What treatment includes

Partial Care at North Jersey Recovery Center treats substance use and mental health as one connected picture, with one team coordinating your care.

Daily group therapy

Multiple therapist-led groups each day address relapse prevention, coping and distress-tolerance skills, emotional regulation, trauma, healthy relationships, and life skills. Groups are small and led by licensed clinicians and trained group facilitators.

Individual therapy

You meet one-on-one with your primary therapist every week to go deeper on the things that brought you here — and at this level of care, when you need more individual time than that, we make room for it.

Psychiatric care and medication management

Our medical team, led by Director of Medical Services Suzanne Salamanca, PhD, APN, PMHNP-BC, provides psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and ongoing monitoring. Medication-Assisted Treatment, including buprenorphine-based medications and naltrexone, can be part of your Partial Care plan.

Evidence-based and holistic modalities

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Behavior Modification Therapy
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Mindfulness and meditation
  • Holistic treatment approaches

Family therapy

Family and couples sessions bring the people in your life into the process so they can understand co-occurring disorders and support your recovery.

Case management

Our case management team helps you handle the practical side of treatment, including work or school documentation, community resources, and a step-down plan to IOP and Outpatient care.

Paying for Partial Care

Most commercial health plans include benefits for partial hospitalization or partial care. We work with plans from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Carelon Behavioral Health (formerly Beacon), UMR, and others. Our admissions team verifies your benefits at no cost, usually the same day you call, and walks you through what your plan may cover. See our insurance page for details.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Partial Care and inpatient rehab?

Partial Care gives you a full day of clinical treatment, then you go home at night. It is a good fit when you want daily structure and psychiatric support while continuing to live at home or in sober living.

How many hours a day is Partial Care?

Partial Care runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at our Fair Lawn center — a full treatment day, with a dietitian-approved lunch provided, while you go home each night. Individual, psychiatric, and family sessions are built into the schedule, and if something keeps you from a day session you can make up the hours at one of our evening sessions.

How long does Partial Care last?

Most clients spend two to five weeks in Partial Care before stepping down to IOP. Your length of stay is based on your progress and your clinical team’s recommendations, not a fixed calendar.

Do you treat depression, anxiety, or trauma in Partial Care?

Yes. Partial Care at North Jersey Recovery Center treats substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions together, with psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and evidence-based therapy in one plan.

Can I use Medication-Assisted Treatment in Partial Care?

Yes. Our medical team can prescribe and monitor MAT medications as part of your Partial Care plan when clinically appropriate. Learn more on our MAT page.
