What Is It?
PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing life-threatening events, such as abuse, assault, combat, accidents, or natural disasters. Trauma survivors may experience a wide range of emotional and physiological responses that can interfere with daily life, relationships, and health. PTSD is characterized by persistent re-experiencing of the trauma, avoidance, negative thoughts or feelings, and hyperarousal.
Signs and Symptoms
Common symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, avoidance of reminders, emotional numbness, feelings of guilt or shame, irritability, hypervigilance, exaggerated startle response, difficulty sleeping, and difficulty concentrating. Many individuals with PTSD also experience depression, anxiety, or substance use disorders.
