Get treatment after work, without putting your life on hold
North Jersey Recovery Center’s Evening Intensive Outpatient Program is built for adults in Bergen County and North Jersey who work during the day, attend classes, or care for a family and want real treatment on a schedule they can actually keep. Groups meet Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at our Fair Lawn center, so you can finish your day and still get several hours of structured, evidence-based care each week.
Evening IOP delivers the same clinical program as our daytime IOP: integrated treatment for alcohol or drug use and co-occurring mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, or bipolar disorder, led by licensed clinicians and supported by our physician-led medical team.
Who Evening IOP is designed for
- Working adults whose jobs make daytime treatment hard to schedule
- College and graduate students with daytime classes
- Parents and caregivers who are available once the household settles in the evening
- People stepping down from Partial Care or daytime IOP who are returning to work
- People transitioning from an inpatient or residential program who are ready to re-enter daily life with continued support
- Adults living with substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions who want both addressed in one program
Treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment — with your level of care assigned using the ASAM Criteria, the national standard for level-of-care decisions — and your plan is built around your history, goals, and schedule. If you need medically supervised detox first, we coordinate it with accredited partners and hold your place in the evening group.
What treatment includes
Evening group therapy
Groups run Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, with small group sessions, led by our clinical staff and trained facilitators, focused on relapse prevention, coping skills, emotional regulation, healthy relationships, and the link between substance use and mental health. Attending several evenings a week keeps momentum without asking you to leave your job or school.
Individual counseling
You meet privately with your primary therapist every week, scheduled around your work hours, and if you need more individual time we work to make room for it.
Evidence-based modalities
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
- Motivational Interviewing
- Trauma-Informed Therapy
- Mindfulness and meditation
- Psychotherapy and psychoeducation
Psychiatric care and medication management
Our medical team, led by Director of Medical Services Suzanne Salamanca, PhD, APN, PMHNP-BC, provides psychiatric evaluation and medication management for co-occurring conditions. Medication-Assisted Treatment can be integrated into your Evening IOP plan.
Family and couples therapy
Family sessions bring your support system into your recovery and help the people at home understand what you are working on.
Aftercare planning
Your therapist and our case management team build your next step before you finish, whether that is our Outpatient Program, our Relapse Prevention Program, or community support.
What a week looks like
| Detail | |
|---|---|
| Group evenings | Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday |
| Group hours | 6:00–9:00 p.m. |
| Weekly attendance | Three evenings a week |
| Individual therapy | Weekly, scheduled around your work hours; more often when you need it |
| Psychiatric follow-up | At least monthly, or more often as your treatment plan calls for; evening appointments available |
| Typical length | 3 to 4 months — longer than daytime IOP because you attend fewer sessions each week |
| Transportation | Available for clients in Bergen, Passaic, Hudson and Essex counties — ask admissions when you call |
A typical evening opens with a check-in, moves into a skills or process group, and closes with planning for the days between sessions. As you progress, your team may reduce your weekly attendance as a bridge to Outpatient care.

Paying for Evening IOP
Evening IOP is billed as intensive outpatient treatment, a benefit included in most commercial health plans. We work with plans from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Carelon Behavioral Health (formerly Beacon), UMR, and others. Our admissions team verifies your benefits at no cost, usually the same day, and explains what your plan may cover. Visit our insurance page to learn more.
Frequently asked questions
What days and times does Evening IOP meet?
Evening IOP groups meet Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at our Fair Lawn center. Individual and psychiatric appointments are scheduled separately around your availability.
Can I keep my job while attending Evening IOP?
Yes. The program exists so you can. Groups start at 6:00 p.m., after most workdays end, and our case management team can help with any documentation you need for work or school.
How long does Evening IOP last?
Most clients participate for three to four months — a bit longer than our daytime IOP, because evening clients usually attend three evenings a week rather than five. Your length of stay depends on your progress, and your team will review it with you regularly.
Do you treat mental health conditions in Evening IOP?
Yes. Evening IOP treats substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions together, with psychiatric evaluation and medication management available alongside therapy.
Is Evening IOP the same quality as daytime IOP?
Yes. It uses the same evidence-based curriculum, the same licensed clinical staff, and the same medical oversight as our daytime program, delivered on an evening schedule.
Does insurance cover Evening IOP?
Many commercial plans include IOP benefits that apply regardless of the time of day you attend. Coverage varies by plan, so we verify yours at no cost before you begin. Call (877) 632-5541 or use our online insurance form.
